Faculty who develop or teach online courses in support of Bama By Distance degree programs may be eligible for a travel grant to attend a conference associated with distance learning. If you are interested in participating in a distance education-related conference, please read the following guidelines and then complete the electronic conference funding request.
Faculty who develop or teach online courses in support of Bama By Distance programs are eligible to apply. Submission of a request does not guarantee an award.
The program runs on a fiscal year cycle, from October 1 through September 30. Funding eligibility is limited to one award per fiscal year. Funds will not be awarded retroactively.
The travel grant will cover the costs of airfare or state vehicle, ground transportation (taxi, shuttle, train, public transportation), hotel/lodging, meals and event registration.
Applicants will be notified of funding approval by email. This notification will include ITAS contact information for assistance with travel arrangements.
We understand that there may be a particular conference you enjoy and find valuable each year, and we appreciate your desire to attend that conference. However, if you have previously received a travel grant, we now require that you identify a different conference the following year. Travel to the same conference will be considered for alternate years. In addition to growing your network, providing a unique perspective and helping you discover new solutions to your teaching challenges, attending a variety of conferences broadens the contributions you bring back to your colleagues.
Funds are limited and every effort should be made to control costs. To lock in the lowest rates on travel expenses, recipients must contact ITAS within 2 weeks after notification of award and must respond immediately to inquiries about their travel date or time preferences. Acceptance of an award indicates your agreement to adhere to this travel grant policy and all University travel policies. ITAS reserves the right to withdraw funding if conditions of the award are not met or the recipient becomes ineligible.
We believe your conference experience is worth sharing with others who develop or teach courses online. By accepting a travel grant, you acknowledge that you will provide a presentation at a future faculty panel. Your presentation should highlight information from a session or sessions you attended. This may include a technology you are excited about, an online teaching strategy you plan to try or have tried, a research study you think may have value to faculty teaching online or something similar. If you are unable to attend the panel due to your class schedule or other commitments, you may be asked to present at a later panel or participate in a video recorded interview or presentation produced by members of the ITAS team.
